MUL_MY14_0004_V001Toyota is always looking for ways to improve your driving experience and the smart key system found on many of their new vehicles is an excellent feature that many drivers are falling in love with. This system is another example of what advanced technology has to offer and it’s designed to make driving even more hassle free.

When the remote key system became available, consumers were thrilled! It was so easy to use. All you had to do was simply press the button to lock or unlock your car. You can start your car and let it warm up on those cold winter mornings while you sit inside your home finishing your cup of coffee or cool it off in the summer.

The remote key system comes standard on most all new vehicles and while it was a hit with drivers everywhere, now Toyota is offering the smart key system.

What Is Toyota’s Smart Key System?

This system has a Smart Key fob designed to unlock the driver’s door with just a touch of the hand. Some vehicles will allow you to open the passenger doors this way, too. You can also start your vehicle with this system without using a key. All you have to do is press the brake pedal and then the button labeled “engine start/stop” to crank or cut off the engine depending on which function you need.

The only catch is that while you don’t need it in your hand, you do need to have the fob with you at all times. It’s so sensitive that if the fob is more than a couple of feet away from the car, it will not unlock or crank the vehicle. Nevertheless, this feature is quite popular and available on many of the new Toyota vehicles.

How Does It Work?

The Toyota’s smart key system is easy to use. Simply lock the vehicle by pressing the button on the handle. If you leave the fob inside the vehicle, it will not lock and you’ll hear a beeping sound alerting you that it is still in the car. To unlock your vehicle all you need to do is grip the door handle and the sensor located on the underside of it will scan for the fob. Once it has found it, the door will unlock automatically but is it safe?

How Secure Is The System?

Being able to unlock your doors without having to fumble around trying to get the keys into the lock is certainly beneficial. It saves you time and makes things so much easier when you have your hands full. However, the main question is, how secure is the system? Can thefts break into and steal your vehicle easier?

The great thing about the Toyota’s smart key system is that it uses rolling codes. In other words, the system will generate a new code everytime you get into your vehicle. Therefore, no one can use a different fob to get into or start it so yes, this system is safe to use. In the event of a dead battery or some type of interference, you will have a regular key as a backup.
