Is Synthetic Oil Change Change Worth It?

Get Your Oil Changed

Why do you need an oil change anyway? Routine maintenance is important because it helps preserve the functionality of your vehicle. Cars are a huge investment and just like any other investment they must be closely watched and nurtured.

To begin, you should always learn the terminology you may encounter with matters concerning your vehicle. This makes for easier communication and in turn a more pleasant experience. So, before diving into the type of oil change you may need it’s important to understand what an oil change is. An oil change consists of removing the old oil from a vehicle’s engine and replacing it with new, fresh oil. A car is made up of many moving parts, all of which are grinding together in order to get you to the place you need to be. This friction creates heat, and it is the job of oil lubricants and your car’s engine to maintain the heat to a low level. Over time, engine oil breaks down and wears out causing damage to many different parts of your car. The more time your car is in the shop for damages, the less time you have to enjoy the open road.

How Often to Change Synthetic Oil?

Just how often should you change the oil in your car? It depends! How many miles are you driving a day? What kind of car are you driving? How old is your engine? All these questions need to be considered when answering how often one should change their oil. Many would recommend changing your oil every 3,000 or even 5,000 miles. Which is pretty frequently if you routinely commute to work. It’s only when you use special synthetic oil will you be able to go up to 10,000 miles without having to change your oil!

Full Synthetic or Not

Synthetic oil was first developed in 1929. Thanks to technology and access to different resources, oil is able to be so refined it could accommodate large, high powered planes to your everyday car. Synthetic oil may cost more but it will save you money in the long run. Synthetic oil lasts longer, therefore, requires less changing. It takes longer to break down, can withstand higher temperatures, and flows easier within your car. This may be a better option if you take shorter trips or if you live in a region with extreme hot or cold weather.

What are the Benefits of Full Synthetic Oil?

If you use your vehicle for towing heavy materials it may be a good idea to opt for synthetic oil. Using this kind of oil has many benefits including a possibly extended engine life, increased horsepower and decreased evaporation loss. In addition, you will get better gas mileage which will also be saving you money in the long run.

The primary difference between fully synthetic and traditional oil is the level of refinement. Most begin with crude oil pumped from deep in the earth. Other synthetic oils use artificial compounds or base oil. The base oil falls into one of several “oil grades” from crude oil to fully artificial compound-based oils.

Although all these benefits may convince you to pay the extra amount for better oil, it all comes down to the manufacturer’s requirements. But if your owner’s manual does state your vehicle requires full synthetic rest assured you’ll enjoy the longevity and performance of your car.

How Much is a Synthetic Oil Change

Full synthetic oil changes typically run from $70-$100 depending on the vehicle. While it may cost you 2 to 3 times more per oil change you will get 2 to 3 times more life between changes all while taking good care of your car. If you drive your vehicle for 12,000 miles per year and change your oil every 3,000 miles you’ll more likely be spending around $180. Using the same 12,000 miles per year and changing every 7,500 miles will bring your cost to around $130. Worth it right?
